The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left Cedar Key, Florida, grappling with an unprecedented level of destruction. As reported by Mazzei (2024), the storm's impact became glaringly visible with the dawn light revealing widespread devastation. The hurricane made landfall as a Category 4 storm, characterized by sustained winds reaching 130 mph . The force of Helene not only damaged infrastructure but also disrupted the lives of countless residents in this coastal community.
For nearly two decades, Scott Peters poured his heart and soul into his Crabbie Dad's bar just across the road from the Steinhatchee River on Florida's Big Bend coast.
He's weathered storms and floods, the ups and downs of the tourist trade, the economy at large and pretty much anything else the world has thrown at him. And for a long time, hurricanes have been a fact of life ‒ and usually mild enough to ride out in town.
Storm-related deaths have been reported in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. At least 19 are dead in South Carolina, including two firefighters who died in Saluda County, according to state officials. In Georgia, at least 15 people have died, two of them killed by a tornado in Alamo, according to a spokesperson for Gov. Brian Kemp. Florida officials reported eight deaths, including several people who drowned in Pinellas County. Six more deaths were reported in North Carolina and they include a car wreck on a storm-slick road that left a 4-year-old girl dead. And in Craig County, Virginia, one person died in a storm-related tree fall and building collapse, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Friday.
In Florida, Hibner said efforts are being focused on the Big Bend area around the capitol city of Tallahassee, an area he noted has been frequently impacted by storms in the past.
“We’re still at the point of getting our assessments done to determine exactly what kind of infrastructure may have been damaged,” he said. The Corps has mobilized more than 100 civilian and military personnel for the effort with about 170 contractors.
In Erwin, Tennessee – just over 40 miles north of Asheville, North Carolina – flooding submerged houses, buildings and roadways.
Erwin resident Nathan Farnor said he evacuated the area on Friday afternoon, when his home was slightly above water level, then he fled to an area a few miles away that is at higher ground.
