Chappell Roan withdraws from festival following backlash over election comments

Chappell Roan's recent withdrawal from the All Things Go festival underscores the complex interplay between celebrity, political discourse, and mental health. The pop singer decided to cancel her performances after experiencing backlash regarding her comments on the 2024 U.S. presidential election, where she expressed reluctance to endorse any candidate due to perceived shortcomings on both sides of the political spectrum . This situation illuminates how public figures navigate their roles in political conversations while managing personal well-being.

The pop star, 26, was scheduled to perform at the festival Saturday in New York City, and Sunday in Columbia, Maryland. In a statement on her Instagram story, Roan apologized to fans, saying that "things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks."

"I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health," she wrote. "I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding."

Representatives for Roan did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ request for comment. In a statement, representatives for All Things Go say they were “heartbroken.”

“All Things Go strongly supports artists prioritizing their well-being and we ask our community to rally around Chappell Roan with love and understanding,” the statement said. “Let’s continue to show the world that music fans support not just the art, but the artists themselves.”

Last month, Roan shared a series of TikTok posts describing her relationship to fame and the inappropriate ways in which people interact with her in public.

“I need you to answer questions, just answer my questions for a second: If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from your car window? Would you harass her in public?” she asked in the videos.

On Friday, some fans expressed disappointment that Roan pulled out of the festival with short notice.

Others expressed their support for her decision, and criticized people who dogpiled her because of her political views, which they believed caused her to cancel her performances.

Roan has more shows scheduled in October, including one in Franklin, Tennessee, on Tuesday.

Roan has been open about her mental health and, in the same interview with The Guardian, said she was in therapy after being diagnosed with severe depression.

“I went to a psychiatrist last week because I was like, I don’t know what’s going on. She diagnosed me with severe depression – which I didn’t think I had because I’m not actually sad. But I have every symptom of someone who’s severely depressed,” Roan said.
