The Montreal Alouettes emerged victorious in a thrilling matchup against the Edmonton Elks, securing a 23-20 win. This victory was a testament to the team's resilience and determination, as they were able to overcome a strong opponent and secure a hard-fought victory.
The Alouettes' defense played a crucial role in the outcome of the game, holding the Elks to just 20 points and putting pressure on their offense throughout the contest. Their ability to make key stops and force turnovers proved to be instrumental in securing the win.
The defending Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes followed the blueprint that helped lead them to a championship last season enroute to a 23-20 victory at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday night. The Als forced 22 interceptions in last season’s championship campaign and were able to collect two more to stymy the Elks offence on the evening. Despite going toe-to-toe with the champs, there was certainly some frustration from the Green and gold about another game let slip.
Fletcher finished the contest with a game-leading 143 all-purpose yards, catching his first touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter and then sealing the road victory with a 39-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Montreal’s Cody Fajardo threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns, adding 27 yards on the ground. Kaion Julien-Grant led his team’s receiving group with six catches for 89 yards.
McLeod Bethel-Thompson went 28-42 with an even 300 yards through the air, giving away two interceptions along the way. Kurleigh Gittens Jr. was his favourite receiver of the day. He caught seven of his nine targets for 93 yards.
The Elks see the home-opener loss to the Roughriders as the one that got away. Two key second-half fumbles, from running back Kevin Brown and quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson, each led to Saskatchewan touchdowns.
That’s a 14-point swing off turnovers in a 29-21 game. You don’t need to be a math genius to recognize the impact the fumbles had.
Elks head coach and general manager Chris Jones knows that the Als have a reputation for turning fumbles and interceptions into touchdowns. So, turnovers are something Edmonton will have to clean up.
Edmonton mounted another strong drive in the late stages and it paid off this time as Prukop went in from short yardage once again with 33 seconds remaining, although it did take three tries from the one to do so.
The Elks attempted to get the ball back on an on-side kick try, but the Alouettes were able to hang on to the ball and run out the clock.
