The Boro’s movie theater Regal Governors Square will close and up for sale

It is with great disappointment that we learned of the closure and impending sale of the Boro's beloved movie theater, Regal Governor's Square. This iconic establishment has been a staple in our community for years, providing entertainment and joy to countless residents and visitors alike.

The closure of Regal Governor's Square marks the end of an era for moviegoers in the Boro. The loss of this cultural hub will undoubtedly leave a void in our community, as it was not just a place to watch films, but also a gathering spot for friends and families to come together and enjoy a shared experience.

These are demi-sized bottles, with an emphasis on local wineries like Coppola, Cakebread, Martin Ray, Stag’s Leap and Petaluma’s own Adobe Road Winery.

Prices range from $26 (for a bottle of Martin Ray Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir) to $58 (for some Stag’s Leap Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon), but based on the number of “Sold Out” spied on a recent trip to the movies, the offerings are proving to be popular.

Question: What wine pairs best with the currently screening Martin Lawrence/Will Smith film “Bad Boys Ride or Die?” Maybe a nice nerve-calming Chardonnay.

What about the upcoming “Alien: Romulus?” Probably something red.

Leon County property records show the current market value of the theater is more than $3.7 million.

Property records also reveal the theater is owned by the California-based group Realty Income.

WCTV also reached out to the theater’s ownership group about the listing. As of Friday evening, WCTV has not heard back from officials with Realty Income.

The theater sits in a "prime retail location" due to its dense population and proximity to the Florida Capitol, Florida A&M University and Florida State University, according to the real estate listing.

Amid the pandemic, Regal was forced to shut its doors to movie buffs across the country, affecting approximately 45,000 employees. But a year later, select theaters got the green light to re-open, including Tallahassee's, according to a previous report.

Featuring 14 auditoriums that can seat 1,795 people, a bistro and lounge, ShowPlace Icon originally opened at The Boro in February 2020, but it quickly closed as the region shut down to limit the spread of COVID-19. The theater temporarily reopened in August 2020 with new safety protocols before closing again due to the challenges of operating under pandemic-related restrictions and a lack of new releases.

The theater reopened on a more long-term basis in April 2021, enticing patrons with a “Welcome Back” promotion that included cheaper-than-usual tickets and food and drink discounts.

Other cinema options in the Tysons area include the long-standing AMC Theatres in Tysons Corner Center, Angelika Film Center at the Mosiac District in Merrifield and CMX CinéBistro — the most recent addition — in Tysons Galleria.
