It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Nick Mavar, a star on the hit reality TV show "Deadliest Catch." Mavar passed away at the young age of 59 due to a sudden medical emergency. His unexpected death has left fans and colleagues in shock, as he was known for his fearless attitude and unwavering dedication to his work.
Mavar's presence on "Deadliest Catch" brought a sense of authenticity and excitement to the show. His expertise in fishing and his ability to navigate treacherous waters made him a fan favorite among viewers. His passion for the sea was evident in every episode, and his loss will undoubtedly leave a void in the fishing community.
The statement continued, "The Bristol Bay police department received a call for a medical emergency at a boatyard in Naknek. Medics responded and transported Nick Mavar Jr. to Camai medical center where they attempted life-saving measures."
"Mr. Mavar was later pronounced deceased and next of kin has been notified," the statement continued. The Bristol Bay Borough Police Department noted that it is still waiting to speak to witnesses that were present.
Mavar later sued the owners of the F/V Northwestern alleging there wasn’t a proper plan in place to get him proper medical help during the pandemic. In turn, the boat owners sued the show’s production company also alleging “failure to have an adequate plan in place” to get outside medical help during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He was a familiar face to fans, given his status on the Northwestern, which is captained by Hansen, the franchise’s de-facto elder statesman. Mavar was also uncle to onetime Northwestern greenhorn turned-deckhand turned-Saga captain, Jake Anderson. Mavar played a key role in one of the show’s longest-running storylines, helping his nephew get sober from drugs and alcohol.
Mavar's passing comes nearly four years after the "Deadliest Catch" crew lost Nick McGlashan, a deckhand on FV Cape Caution and a deck boss on FV Summer Bay.
McGlashan passed away in December 2020 at the age of 33. In a statement to E! News at the time of his death, Discovery sent their condolences to his family, sharing, "Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions."
Nine years before, Mavar was a victim of another incident while filming “Deadliest Catch.” During an aggressive storm, a hook came loose and struck Mavar in the face, leaving him with a broken nose. Like the appendix scare, this moment would be documented on Discovery Channel’s YouTube channel.
After working on the reality TV show for over 15 years, Mavar spent his last days in Bristol Bay captaining his own salmon boat. Fans of the series have turned to social media to mourn his death.
