On a historic night in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his middleweight crown against challenger Avni Yildirim. The Mexican superstar put on a masterclass performance, dominating the fight from start to finish and ultimately securing a TKO victory in the third round. With this win, Alvarez solidified his status as one of the greatest boxers of his generation and further cemented his legacy in the sport.
However, the night was not without its surprises as rising star Jaime Munguia suffered his first defeat at the hands of Maciej Sulecki. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Munguia was unable to overcome Sulecki's relentless pressure and precision punching. This loss serves as a learning experience for Munguia and will undoubtedly fuel his drive to bounce back stronger in future fights.
Canelo improved to 61-2-2 (39 KO) on scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 117-110. Bad Left Hook unofficially scored the fight 117-110 and 118-109 on two separate cards.
Munguia falls to 43-1 (34 KO) with his first pro loss, and also suffered the first knockdown of his pro career in round four.
The defending champion, who put his four super-middleweight belts on the line, was in complete control for the remainder of the contest, with the three judges scoring the fight 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.
Alvarez landed 234 punches in total, while Munguia managed 170.
Alvarez steadily chipped away as Munguia left himself open while attacking Alvarez. Munguia made for an exciting fight but ultimately Alvarez controlled the pace and looked comfortable throughout.
When asked if former two-time super middleweight champion David Benavidez may be next, Alvarez was non-committal and left his options open.
"I don't know right now, I'm going to rest. I'm going to enjoy my family," Alvarez said. "But you know if the money is right ... I can fight right now."
The viewing options are pretty straightforward tonight: the fight will stream on DAZN in several countries.
