Borussia Dortmund: Marco Reus to leave club at end of this season

Borussia Dortmund fans were left in shock and disbelief when the news broke that their beloved captain, Marco Reus, would be leaving the club at the end of this season. Reus, who has been a key player for Dortmund for over a decade, has become synonymous with the club and is adored by fans worldwide.

The announcement has sparked mixed emotions among supporters, with many expressing sadness at the prospect of seeing their star player depart. Reus' departure marks the end of an era for Dortmund, as he leaves behind a legacy of passion, skill, and dedication to the team.

The 34-year-old Dortmund academy product rejoined the club from Borussia Mochengladbach in 2012 and has gone on to make 424 appearances so far, scoring 168 goals and contributing 128 assists.

“I’ve got to play in this wonderful stadium for 12 years. I’ve dedicated half of my life to this club, been through a lot of highs and lows – more highs, in my opinion,” Reus started saying in a video addressed to Borussia supporters, before officially breaking the news: “The club and I have come to the decision not to sign a contract extension.”

Born in Dortmund and previously a part of the club’s youth setup, Reus returned to BVB from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 and has since played 424 times for Die Schwarzgelben, scoring 168 goals and providing 128 assists in 12 years.

In his record, Reus has won two German Cups and two German Super Cups and reached the Champions League final in 2013 against Bayern Munich, where they were defeated 2-1.

Looking ahead, the player aims for Borussia to finish in the top five in the league standings, which grants access to Europe's top competition, and most importantly, dreams of securing the club's second Champions League title as they are one step away from the final after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of the semi-finals.

Dortmund travel to France on Tuesday for the return leg, hoping to reach the final for the first time since 2013. Dortmund won the trophy in 1997.

During his time at Dortmund, Reus has won two DFB-Pokals, two German Supercups and played an integral role in his side reaching the Champions League final in 2013. He was also named footballer of the year in Germany in 2012 and 2019.

Reus has also been capped on 48 occasions for Germany.
