Elton John, the legendary British musician and singer-songwriter, has achieved yet another milestone in his illustrious career by winning the prestigious EGOT. The term EGOT refers to individuals who have received all four major American entertainment awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. With this remarkable accomplishment, Elton John joins an elite group of artists who have left an indelible mark on the world of music and entertainment.
Elton John's journey to EGOT began with his first Grammy win in 1986 for his album "That's What Friends Are For." Over the years, he continued to dominate the music industry with numerous chart-topping hits and critically acclaimed albums. His captivating performances earned him multiple Emmy Awards for his live concerts and television specials.
“The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world,” John, 76, said in a statement after winning his trophy.
The superstar performer has five Grammys, most recently for “Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida” in 2001; two Oscars for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” in 1994 and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”; along with a Tony for his original score on “Aida.”
He is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, and he holds the record for biggest-selling physical single of all time thanks to the 33 million copies sold for “Candle in the Wind” in 1997.
John is a 35-time Grammy Award nominee, having won five. In 1987, John won the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammy Award for “That’s What Friends Are For” as part of Dionne and Friends, led by Dionne Warwick. Later, he won Best Instrumental Composition for “Basque.” In 1995, he won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Three years later, in that same category, John won for “Candle in the Wind.” In 2001, John and Rice won Best Musical Show Album for “Aida.”
Notably, “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” beat out the broadcast of the 75th annual Tony Awards, which was nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category along with “The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna,” “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “The Oscars.”
Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium, which debuted on Disney+, received three Emmy nominations. The singer filmed the special on Nov. 20, 2022 as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. A documentary titled Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years That Made His Legend was also released alongside it.
