On a fateful evening, tragedy struck the peaceful city of Greensboro when an off-duty police officer was shot and killed at a local gas station. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents in disbelief and mourning the loss of one of their own. However, amidst the grief, there is a glimmer of hope as two suspects have been arrested in connection with this heinous crime.
The shooting death of an off-duty police officer is not only a devastating loss for his family and friends but also an attack on the entire law enforcement community. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that officers face every day while serving and protecting their communities.
Police said the two suspects were men in their early 20s. One was last seen wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants, black shoes, and a green or gray toboggan. The second suspect was last seen wearing a jean jacket with fur, gray sweatpants, and tennis shoes.
Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said another off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic at the gas station tried to save the officer. However, the officer died at the hospital.
“We ask for prayers for the family of the fallen officer and our Greensboro PD family,” Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said.
Thompson did not release information on the officer, but did say he was an off-duty sergeant trying to stop a crime at the time of the shooting and had been in the department for 22 years.
Police have not released the officer’s name, but did say the Sergeant was a 22-year veteran of the department and a “loving husband, father, son and brother”.
In the Blue Alert, authorites reported the suspects drove away after the shooting & headed westbound on 1-40 West in a black colored Chevrolet Equinox bearing NC tag KKA-4332. Authorities say the vehicle also has a Hertz Car Sales plate on the front.
The two suspects in the car were described as two men in their early to mid-20s. One was wearing a black hoodie and black sweatpants with black shoes. The other was wearing a jean jacket with fur and gray sweatpants, with tennis shoes.
Chief Thompson did not mention any arrests during the news briefing late Saturday night.
