Patriots Loss to Chiefs 27-17

The New England Patriots hung tough early against the Kansas City Chiefs, but big plays and a big mistake opened an opportunity for Patrick Mahomes that he did not waste, quickly reestablishing a double-digit lead, en route to a 27-17 win in Foxborough.

Things looked promising early as Bailey Zappe completed all but two passes in building a 10-7 lead in the second quarter, but the Pats defense could only contain Mahomes for so long as the reigning Super Bowl champs showed why they'll still be a tough out for any playoff opponent that must face them.

Kansas City poured on 20 straight points after falling behind 10-7, while New England's second half included a first-play interception followed by four three-and-outs in a row as they failed to recover their early game production for a second week in a row.

The game was originally scheduled for Monday Night Football, but was flexed out of primetime with the Patriots struggling this season.

Swift has been in attendance for several Chiefs games throughout the season. Though many football fans were not interested in her whereabouts this week, a large number of Swifties in New England had their eyes on Foxboro ahead of the game.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney again made a costly mistake, deflecting a catchable pass to a defender for an interception. Coach Andy Reid was noncommittal about whether Toney would remain in the lineup for next week's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, saying, "We'll see how things go."

"I'm not down on Toney," Reid said. "He does some good things ... He's a young guy, so we're not talking about somebody that has been in this league a long time.''

Toney deflected a catchable pass to a defender who returned it for a touchdown in a one-point loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1. He was penalized late in the fourth quarter of last week's game against the Buffalo Bills for lining up offside, nullifying the Chiefs' go-ahead touchdown. The Chiefs wound up turning the ball over on downs on the drive and losing the game.

Chiefs WR Skyy Moore came out of the game with a swollen left knee. ... Patriots OL Cole Strange injured his knee early in the second quarter and was taken off on a cart. He was ruled out a few minutes later. … DB Jonathan Jones was announced with a knee injury at halftime. … OL Conor McDermott left the game with a head injury. … TE Hunter Henry left the game in the second half with a knee injury.
