Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola blasted his team after their careless defending and a needless late-game penalty cost them a much-needed victory in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday, saying they deserved the result.
"It's not bad luck, it's deserved," an angry Guardiola told reporters after the game. "We give away two points. When you give away this penalty, you deserve it. You see the chances we created and conceded, it's quite similar to all this season -- but we are not able to close the games. That is the feeling."
City was 2-0 ahead through goals by Jack Grealish in the 24th minute and Rico Lewis in the 54th, only to draw at home for a third straight time in the league.
Palace reduced the deficit in the 76th when Jean-Philippe Mateta slid home a finish from close range and Olise converted from the spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time after Mateta was tripped by Phil Foden.
Jack Grealish’s side-footed effort opened the scoring on 24 minutes for the Citizens, who had, up to that point, struggled to penetrate a determined Palace defensive block, resolutely parked deep in their own half in a 5-4-1 formation.
Rico Lewis doubled the advantage after the break with a half-volley from close range, but excellent work down the left from Jeffrey Schlupp teed up Mateta to prod Palace en route to an unlikely comeback.
Phil Foden, the architect for City’s opener, was the villain, as his trip on Mateta gave Olise the chance to earn Palace an outstanding point, and the Frenchman sent Ederson the wrong way to send the travelling support wild.
City's breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Phil Foden fed Grealish, and he slotted past Henderson for his third goal in as many league games - the effort standing after a lengthy VAR check for offside.
City had their second in the 54th minute as Grealish's pass ricocheted off Rodri and the ball fell to Lewis for a close-range finish, the 19-year-old's first Premier League goal being confirmed after a VAR review.
But Palace pulled a goal back in the 76th minute when a long ball found Jeffrey Schlupp and he supplied Mateta, who slid home to start the nerves jangling in Guardiola's team.
Deep into stoppage time City fans' fears were realised as Foden caught Mateta in the box, referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot, and Olise calmly dispatched the ball past Ederson.
