Saudi football club Al Hilal has approached Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain with a €300mn bid to buy out Kylian Mbappé, a record-breaking offer for the French forward who has been locked in a row with his club over his contract. Al Hilal, which is owned by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, made the offer in a letter sent to PSG on July 22, and requested to enter talks with Mbappé, according to a person with direct knowledge of the approach. Another person briefed on the matter said the bid was preliminary. The approach has emerged amid increasing tensions between PSG and its star player. The French club, owned by state-backed Qatar Sports Investments since 2011, is seeking to cash in a big transfer fee before his contract expires next year, according to a person close to PSG. Mbappé has signalled he is willing to wait for his contract to end, which would deny PSG the possibility to negotiate such a fee.
The move comes after Paris Saint-Germain left Mbappé out of their squad for their pre-season tour of Japan, determined to sell him unless he signs a new contract. PSG will accept Al-Hilal’s offer but there have been no talks between Al-Hilal and Mbappé, and PSG remain convinced the 24-year-old has agreed terms to join Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer
Al-Hilal are one of the clubs owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. They have already signed Ruben Neves from Wolves and Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea this summer.
Mbappe has not commented on the bid but responded to a tweet from NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who joked: "Al Hilal you can take me. I look like Kylian Mbappe"
Relations between Mbappe and PSG have been tense since the French forward said last month he would not renew his contract which expires at the end of next season, when he could leave Paris for free.
PSG President Nasser al Khelaifi has said they will not let him go for free.
