Free agent wing Dillon Brooks has agreed on a four-year, $80 million contract with the Houston Rockets, his agent, Mike George of One Legacy Sports, told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Saturday.
The deal will be descending in annual salary, sources told Wojnarowski.
The Rockets also agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with free agent center Jock Landale, sources told Wojnarowski. Only the first season of the deal is guaranteed.
With these pair of signings, along with the blockbuster addition of point guard Fred VanVleet, the Rockets are aiming to take a step forward next season under new head coach Ime Udoka.
A 6-foot-6, 27-year-old wing, Brooks has averaged 14.5 points (34.2% on 3-pointers) in 28.7 minutes over six seasons with the Grizzlies. His primary value would seem to come as a tough, hard-nosed defender with considerable defensive versatility, though it’s possible his shooting numbers could improve if new Rockets head coach Ime Udoka can work to help improve Brooks’ shot selection.
The changes were so extreme that while reaching deals in the first 24 hours of free agency that will bring in four players, the Rockets sent out three, including K.J. Martin, who played every game for the Rockets last season and started the last 41.
Martin was sent to the Clippers for a pair of second-round picks, a move that returns him to his hometown and clears some of the glut on the roster. Martin averaged 12.7 points on 57 percent shooting along with 5.7 rebounds but did not bring the defense the Rockets expect or 3-point shooting the Rockets hope to get from Brooks.
Brooks' breakout in 2019-20 made him a fixture in Memphis, one who in spurts was the Grizzlies' best player alongside Ja Morant. Memphis was plus-5.8 points per possession better with Brooks on the floor in 2021-22, with another positive differential in 2021-22 (plus-3.7). Brooks shot a combined 35.1 percent from three in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, and Brooks's finest moment in Memphis came in Game 6 of a first-round series against Minnesota, when he canned five threes in a victory to close out the series.
After the Grizzlies’ first-round playoff exit, reports emerged they would be likely parting ways with Brooks in the offseason. With Memphis seemingly in the rearview, Brooks will be expected to serve as a veteran presence to a slew of young talent including 2023 No. 4 overall pick Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore, Jabari Smith, Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr. and Alperen Sengun
