Manchester United will back Ruben Amorim in the summer transfer window despite their Europa League failure, talkSPORT understands.
Amorim retains the confidence of the United hierarchy despite overseeing their worst ever Premier League season coupled with Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao.
A season from hell got even worse for Amorim with defeat in the Europa finalGettyMinority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is overseeing the club’s football operations, also believes the majority of the United fanbase support Amorim.
Defeat in the final means United miss out on a windfall of more than £100million from Champions League qualification, but there is still money to spend even though Ratcliffe has claimed they were in danger of going bust.
United are already well advanced in their negotiations with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and are ready to activate his £62.5m release clause.
They have also held face-to-face talks with Ipswich striker Liam Delap and Lyon star Rayan Cherki is another potential recruit.
However, Amorim will have his work cut out to convince Sporting striker and Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres to follow him to Old Trafford without the lure of Champions League football.
One player whose future looks certain to be away from United is the frustrated Alejandro Garnacho.
Garnacho hit out at Amorim after being benched until the final 19 minutes against Spurs and as previously reported by talkSPORT, United are willing to cash in on their academy graduate.
Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are both interested in rescuing Garnacho from his Old Trafford misery.
United could also make a big profit on fellow academy product Kobbie Mainoo.
Sources close to Mainoo claim he wants to stay, but he was also left on the bench for most of Wednesday’s game and has reservations about his role in Amorim’s system.
Misfiring striker Rasmus Hojlund will also be made available for transfer, although United know they would have to take a huge financial hit on the £72m they paid Atalanta for him in 2023.
Fernandes admitted that he could leave the club if they wish to sell himGetty All three of the Man United ‘star trio’ could leave this summerGettyCaptain Bruno Fernandes has also hinted he could be sold to raise funds and talkSPORT has been told he and Harry Maguire have become disillusioned with the United top brass.
It is still unlikely United would cash in on Fernandes given his importance to the team.
Ben Foster’s verdict
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster joined talkSPORT Breakfast in the wake of the Europa League final and believes there are only two players in the squad that can be trusted.
Genuinely, there’s probably two players that I would trust in the Man United team. That would be Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.
I need honesty. I need good, solid, hard-working lads and that is what Man United need.
Amorim’s record at United is grim readingThis morning, Garnacho’s already bemoaning his lack of game time in the final.
I can have players coming out after the final. We’ve lost, we’re in this together, we’re a team. But he makes it all about him and that’s what you need to get away from.
You need to make it all about the team, not the individuals.
I don’t care who you play for you, you don’t come out and do stuff like that.
It’s on the senior players here to be grabbing him on the plane this morning and say ‘What are you doing, what are you thinking?’
You look at the differences between United and Spurs… you’ve got Brennan Johnson, you see his interview afterwards, he doesn’t look like he’s had a fresh trim, he’s just seems a really well-spoken good lad.
And then you’ve got Garnacho who doesn’t seem to care about the team, he’s sat on the pitch and it’s all about him at that moment, and the tweet comes and it epitomises it all for me.
The club is rotten to the core.
