BCCI selectors ask Arshdeep Singh to be ready for Test debut in England: Reports ...Middle East

With India set to tour England for a five-Test series, the national selectors have reportedly asked Arshdeep Singh to be on standby for a potential red-ball debut. As per a Telegraph India report, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel has “sounded out” the left-arm pacer and instructed him to stay battle-ready ahead of the high-profile tour starting next month.

Arshdeep Singh in England – A must need for India

Arshdeep has long been seen as a promising option to add variety to India’s predominantly right-arm pace attack. His ability to swing the ball both ways, particularly with the Dukes ball (used in England), has caught the eye of the selectors. The report suggests that Arshdeep’s stint with Kent in the English County Championship last year played a crucial role in the consideration.

He took 13 wickets across five games for Kent, bowling 161.4 overs — a decent number for a player making his County debut.

Though not part of the India A squad for the warm-up matches, sources believe Arshdeep’s omission could be due to his likely involvement in the IPL 2025 playoffs with the Punjab Kings. The same could apply to Shreyas Iyer, who also finds himself out of the A squad despite recent Test experience.

IPL form & abilities warrant a place

Arshdeep has been in excellent rhythm during IPL 2025, picking up 16 wickets in 11 innings at a strike rate of 15.1. Notably, his spell in chilly Dharamsala against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he dismantled the top order, was looked at as a trailer of his immense control over swing in conditions not unlike what he’ll encounter in England.

While best known for his exploits in T20Is — he is India’s leading wicket-taker in the format — Arshdeep has quietly built a respectable red-ball resume. In 21 First-Class matches, he has picked up 66 wickets at an average of 30.37, which isn’t ideal but will only improve once he gets more games. His Ranji Trophy appearances have been limited due to national commitments, but he remains in the BCCI’s long-term plans.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, speaking on The ICC Review, dismissed the notion of Arshdeep being pigeonholeed as a white-ball specialist. “If he can bowl 15-20 overs for me, he might very well be in the mix because he’s got the mindset. He is a thinking bowler, and I need a left-armer,” Shastri said.

With doubts over the fitness of Mohammed Shami, and none of the backup pacers like Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, or Harshit Rana locking down a spot, Arshdeep’s inclusion appears more than plausible.
