House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) announced on Tuesday that Democratic Govs. Kathy Hochul (New York), JB Pritzker (Illinois), and Tim Walz (Minnesota) will testify before the panel next month about their states’ sanctuary city policies.
The hearing, which is slated for June 12, comes after Comer called on the three governors to testify and provide documents and communications connected to their respective states’ sanctuary cities policies last month.
“The Trump Administration is taking decisive action to deport criminal illegal aliens from our nation but reckless sanctuary states like Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are actively seeking to obstruct federal immigration enforcement,” Comer said in a statement.
“The governors of these states must explain why they are prioritizing the protection of criminal illegal aliens over the safety of U.S. citizens, and they must be held accountable,” he continued.
In March, the Democratic mayors of New York, Boston, Denver, and Chicago testified before the committee in a high-profile hearing over their statuses as sanctuary cities.
The three Democratic governors have become prominent voices in the Democratic resistance during Trump’s second administration.
Late last month, Pritzker called for mass protests against the administration, while Walz took part in a series of town hall events outside of his home state criticizing Trump and Republicans.
While Hochul has met with Trump at the White House on a series of issues, the New York governor has also been a vocal critic of the president’s. Hochul said on Monday that it was “shocking” to hear Trump say in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” over the weekend that he doesn’t know whether he needs to follow the Constitution.
Pritzker has been floated as a top potential 2028 presidential contender while Hochul is facing a reelection bid in 2026
