The film, subtitled The Inside Story of the Most Successful and Controversial Female Comedian of Our Time, will also be available on VOD and streaming services in July.
Directed by Joel Gilbert, the film chronicle’s Barr’s life story, including her challenging childhood in which she was raised Jewish in Salt Lake City, Utah.
From there, she moved to Los Angeles and started performing at The Comedy Store and soon was invited to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and landed a gig opening for singer Julio Iglesias. She appeared with Rodney Dangerfield in his 1986 HBO special as his wife and then soon got her own specials. Her success culminated with her own sitcom Roseanne, which became a rating smash but had the star fighting the show’s writers over story lines and characters.
In the new documentary, Barr gives her side of the story through exclusive interviews as well as glimpses of her youth through photographs and home movies.
