Lynn Hamilton, known for her roles in ‘Sanford and Son’ and ‘The Waltons,’ has died at 95

Lynn Hamilton, a distinguished actress celebrated for her roles in iconic television series such as "Sanford and Son" and "The Waltons," passed away on June 19, 2025, at the age of 95 . Her portrayal of Ann Esther in "Sanford and Son" provided a crucial representation of African American women during a time when such visibility was limited. In "The Waltons," she brought depth to her character, further showcasing her versatility as an actress. Hamilton's career spanned several decades, reflecting her adaptability and commitment to the craft of acting.

Carson added that she “transitioned peacefully” on Thursday, surrounded by her “grandchildren, loved ones and caregivers.”

In a 2009 interview, Hamilton said that the team behind Sanford & Son was "so impressed" with her day-player role as a landlord that they wrote the part of Foxx's girlfriend just for her.

"A month or two later, they decided to give Fred Sanford a girlfriend,” said Hamilton, adding, "[They] needed somebody dignified opposite him; he was aware of his earthliness, shall we say."

Throughout her career, Hamilton frequently collaborated with her husband, Frank S. Jenkins, on theater productions, including the acclaimed play "Nobody" and "The Bert Williams Story."

She auditioned for a part in Funny Girl (1968) and didn’t get it but decided to remain in Los Angeles, and she would land gigs on TV shows including Room 222, Mannix, Gunsmoke, The Rockford Files, Quincy M.E., The Golden Girls, NYPD Blue, Judging Amy and Cold Case.

Hamilton was married to poet and playwright Frank Jenkins (Driving While Black in Beverly Hills) from 1964 until his death at age 89 in 2014 — she moved back to Chicago that year — and they collaborated on several stage productions.

Throughout her career, Hamilton appeared in numerous notable television shows including "Generations," "Gunsmoke," and "Hawaii Five-O" . Her performances contributed significantly to the cultural landscape of American television. The impact she had on audiences is evident not only through her memorable characters but also through the doors she opened for future generations of actors.
