DENVER (KDVR) -- The jury found Joseph Keonig, 20, guilty of first-degree murder for the death of twenty-year-old Alexa Bartell, who was killed when a rock came through her windshield and hit her in the head.

On Friday, the jury found Keonig guilty on 19 counts, including of attempt to commit murder in the first degree, reckless endangerment, assault in the third degree, assault in the second degree, attempt to commit assault in the second degree, attempt to commit assault in the third degree and attempt to commit reckless manslaughter.

Some of these were lesser charges than the prosecution asked for. The sentencing will take place on June 3 at 8:30 a.m.

The trial for the third person involved in Bartell's death began on April 14 before the jury went into deliberation on Thursday afternoon. The jury deliberated for about a day before coming to a verdict.

Three high school students were throwing large landscaping rocks at passing cars on the night of April 19, 2023. Bartell was driving on the 10-600 block of Indiana Street in Jefferson County when a rock went through her windshield, hitting her in the head and killing her.

Koenig, 18 years old at the time, was on trial for first-degree murder. It was claimed he was the one who ultimately threw the rock that killed Bartell.

Koenig was one of three 18-year-old defendants, but defendants Nicholas Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak took plea deals, pleading guilty to lesser charges in exchange for agreeing to testify at Koenig’s trial.

Zachary Kwak, who was in the car with Koenig, pleaded guilty in May 2023 to one count of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault and an added count of criminal attempt to commit assault. As part of the plea deal, he will serve no less than 20 years but no more than 32 years.

Nicholas "Mitch" Karol-Chik, who was also in the car, also pleaded guilty in May 2024 to second-degree murder, criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree and crime of violence, which can be a sentence enhancer.
