On April 10, 2025, Blue Ridge Beef announced a recall of 1,080-pounds of their 2-pound logs of Kitten Mix and Puppy Mix due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria. The products were distributed between January 3, 2025 and January 24, 2025 and packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores across the US.
The recall was initiated after the company received a customer complaint of animal illness. After collecting samples of the products on 3/20/25 by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the firm was notified by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture that the products tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria.
Along with pets, humans who handle the contaminated pet products are also at risk, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to the products. Pets with Salmonella or Listeria infections may be lethargic or have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Additionally, some pets will experience decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
Furthermore, infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Those who have pets exhibiting these symptoms after consumption of the recalled products should reach out to their veterinarian for further instructions.
