Investigators said Tuesday that San Diego police fatally shot an armed man following a 30-minute car chase that included a collision south of Balboa Park.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

A witness notified police of a man with a partially concealed rifle in his jacket near Sanger Place and Blanche Street in San Ysidro around 3:20 p.m. Monday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The witness told police the man placed the rifle into a white Ford F-150 truck and retrieved a handgun. He then argued with a bicyclist.

The bicyclist left the area and the man allegedly fired one round from the handgun. It hit the ground in the direction of the bicyclist, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

San Diego police arrived and contacted the man before he got into the truck and drove off.

Officers pursued the driver for over 30 minutes. The chase moved northbound on Interstate 5 to Interstate 15 and onto surface streets, officials said. Eventually, the man turned into a cul-de-sac near Golden Hill and attempted to flee.

Officials accused the suspect of reversing the truck into a police K-9 patrol vehicle. The man then drove into a pavilion in a resident’s front yard and came to a stop.

Two police officers shot multiple rounds at the man after he revved the truck’s engine, sheriff officials reported.

They removed the man from the truck, began life-saving measures and summoned paramedics, but the man died.

A K-9 officer sustained minor injuries from the deployment of his vehicle’s airbag in the collision with the truck.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives recovered a rifle and a handgun from the suspect’s vehicle, officials said.

The Sheriff’s homicide unit is conducting the investigation under the terms of a countywide law enforcement agreement designed to prevent conflicts of interest.

When the unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers are criminally liable for their actions.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or the after-hours number at (858) 868-3200. Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
