Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan facing NFL Christmas Day ban as Netflix makes Fox Sports play

The traditional broadcasters are giving Netflix a lump of coal for Christmas this year.

Fans will tune in to the streaming giant to watch the Dallas Cowboys take on the Washington Commanders and the Minnesota Vikings face the Detroit Lions.

Netflix has requested on-air talent to help with its broadcast and been met with a cold response, per Front Office Sports.

ESPN, which provided Laura Rutledge and Mina Kimes for last year’s slate, has reportedly already shut the door, with Fox Sports set to follow suit.

In 2024, Fox allowed Greg Olsen to work as a color commentator but the top announcing duo of Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt were off limits.

Studio superstars Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan would also be ruled out if the network opts for a blanket ban.

Netflix is an irregular participant in streaming games and does not have its own roster of talent to rely on.

Amazon — another streaming giant muscling into the broadcasters’ territory — does but has its own game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos.

CBS produced the games for Netflix last year, with Ian Eagle, J.J. Watt, Nate Burleson, and Gene Steratore adding depth to the broadcast.

The arrangement remains in place and a similar line-up can be expected.

With talks over the NFL‘s next TV rights deal potentially place in 2029, Fox, ESPN and CBS are bracing for a challenge from Netflix and Amazon and the streamers try to increase their portfolios.

Brady alone is on a $375 million package and exclusive access to the opinions of key personalities is part of the reason media deals are so lucrative.

NFL Network could offer up some of its talent pool to help Netflix put on a Christmas double-header to remember.

YouTube is broadcasting the Los Angeles Chargers‘ Week 2 clash against the Chiefs, with NBC handling production, and may face a similar battle.

Netflix has grand plans for its offering and is keen to muscle in on the sacred Sunday slate.

The streamer’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, told Matt Belloni of Puck that a bid could be considered.

This would mean taking a bite out of the NFL’s rights on either CBS or FOX.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio hinted that the league will most likely end its current broadcast deals early to re-negotiate, giving Netflix the opportunity to pounce.

    NFL's Greatest......

    Ranking the top 10......

Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?

Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?

Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and more

Tight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?

“The current broadcast deals run through 2033,” Florio wrote.

“The league has the right to pull the plug on the deals four years early, and it likely will.

“So a major shake-up could be coming, with Netflix becoming a very major player in the NFL broadcast landscape.

“And if Netflix is in, one of the current partners will be out. Or, at best, relegated to Sunday mornings.”
