The Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (AZSTA) announced Tuesday that it will distribute a record $6.3 million grant to 36 organizations across Maricopa County that promote youth and amateur sports programs.
The grant will fund everything from new locker rooms and field renovations to a new beach volleyball venue and state-of-the-art fitness zone.
“AZSTA is proud to partner with these worthy non-profits and schools whose youth and amateur sports programs positively impact the lives of thousands of Arizonans,” AZSTA Board Chair Kim Grace Sabow said in the press release. “With more than $39 million in grants awarded since 2001, AZSTA continues to fulfill the promise made to Maricopa County voters when they approved Proposition 302.”
Grant recipients were chosen based on factors such as financial need, community partnerships and projects designed with an overall benefit to the Maricopa County community, with priority given to recreational facilities near public schools.
The grants were awarded to organizations and projects from 12 communities: Avondale, Chandler, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Goodyear, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Surprise and Tempe.
Since its origin in 2001, AZSTA said it has awarded more than $39 million to more than 700 projects across Maricopa County.
AZSTA was created in the vote for Prop. 302., a measure designed to support the upkeep and funding of State Farm Stadium and Cactus League facilities, youth sports in the area and Maricopa County tourism marketing and promotion.
