Jeff Hardy turned down a WWE Hall of Fame induction after being offered a solo spot without his brother.
It wasn’t revealed exactly when the offer was made, but Matt Hardy has confirmed it was while he was working with AEW — which would time it at well over a year ago at least.
Quite who reached out to the iconic high-flyer isn’t clear, either, but the most likely source would be Nick Khan, WWE’s President, or Head of Creative and Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, given the pair control all the aspects of the company’s talent and on-screen affairs.
What’s not uncertain, however, is that this incredible invitation – the kind many stars wait a lifetime for — was knocked back.
It appears WWE wanted to induct him solely, not the Hardy Boyz. That, for Jeff, was a deal-breaker.
The brothers, who helped revolutionise tag team wrestling across the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras, have always shared a legacy.
From death-defying ladder matches and TLC classics to cinematic storytelling in TNA, they’ve spent decades intertwined.
So, when WWE approached Jeff alone, it didn’t sit right.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani, Jeff explained: “It didn’t feel right at all. I was like, it’s not time for me to do that. And it just didn’t feel right going in without Matt.
“It was just that in the moment, man, that’s the way I felt.”
Matt, now long gone from AEW, confirmed he wasn’t contacted — and clarified why, saying: “Because I worked at AEW at the time.”
He added: “I think we do want to do the WWE Hall of Fame. I think we would like maybe one last hurrah with WWE, and that could even be possible while working with TNA too.”
If Triple H wants Jeff Hardy in the Hall of Fame, he’ll need to invite Matt, too.WWE The Hardyz’ return at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando remains an iconic modern-day momentWWEMatt, himself a solo star once the Hardyz parted way on screen, continued: “We’ll see. It would be nice to still have the most limited schedule we could have, which would optimize the amount of time we can spend at home with our families and our kids.
“But yeah, I mean, everything’s kind of up in the air right now, you know, and we both feel good. And I think we’re going to rock and roll as long as we feel like we can do it.”
The Hardys’ credentials are undisputed. Seven-time WWE Tag Team Champions. Trailblazers of the ladder match era. Jeff went on to win the WWE and World Heavyweight titles, while Matt carried multiple championships and reinvented himself entirely with the ‘Broken’ persona.
Their 2017 return at WrestleMania 33 – as a team – remains one of the most shared moments in modern wrestling: a surprise comeback in front of over 75,000 fans that instantly went viral, and helped launch a final run with both Raw and SmackDown tag title reigns.
Matt has called a joint induction “inevitable.” But Jeff’s decision to reject a solo honour makes it clear: the moment has to be right — and they have to go in together.
WWE’s reaction to the refusal? According to Jeff, it was a short retort of simply: ‘good luck.’

For now, the Hardys have been back in TNA, working lighter schedules and holding the door open for one final WWE run, appetites no-doubt whetted by recent appearances on NXT as part of the crossover agreement between the two companies.
As for the Hall of Fame? The men themselves seem in no doubt – but they’ll have to go in together.
