ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As the Fourth of July approaches, doctors are urging caution with fireworks, recommending leaving them to professionals. Fireworks can be dangerous, with sparklers burning at around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to cause severe burns.
First responders, including doctors and firefighters, typically see an increase in injuries and calls during this time of year. Dr. Keith Grams, Director of Emergency Medicine at Rochester Regional Health, discussed ways to avoid the emergency department this Fourth of July.
“I think probably most of the injuries are lower acuity as far as, like, probably just minor burns and things like that,” said Grams. “But unfortunately every now and then you get that catastrophic injury that just it’s just really kind of very, very sad to see it happen.”
Grams recommended putting a damp towel or cloth over a burn, then following up with an antibiotic ointment or Vaseline. He advised against using ice water, as it can restrict blood flow.
To avoid major injuries, Grams suggested not holding onto a firecracker too long or too close to where it ignites. He emphasized that most firework injuries seen in the emergency department are preventable.
Grams said holidays are for having fun and spending time with loved ones, but it’s important to stay safe to enjoy future holidays together.
He also reminded people to stand far enough away from fireworks to protect their hearing, or use hearing protection if unable to maintain a safe distance.
