Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly exploring a major trade deal with Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the IPL 2026 season. According to Cricbuzz, CSK’s interest in Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson is not just speculation, and there are genuine discussions taking place within the franchise.
Samson last played for RR in IPL 2025 as captain. He has become the face of the team since taking over the leadership role in 2021. RR have a win-loss record of 33 wins and 32 losses under his captaincy. Notably, he led the team to the IPL 2022 final, their first appearance in the tournament's title clash since 2008.
A senior CSK official confirmed that the franchise is interested in acquiring Sanju Samson but added that no formal talks have taken place with Rajasthan Royals yet. Speaking to Cricbuzz anonymously, the official stated that trade options have not advanced, as the process remains in its early stages.
"We are definitely looking at Sanju. He is an Indian batter, who is a keeper and an opener. So if he is available, we will certainly have a look at the option of having him in our fold. Who we will trade him with we have not taken that call because the matter has not gone that far. But yes, in principle, we are interested," the CSK official, involved in the decision-making process, told this website on the condition of anonymity.
Multiple Franchises Eye Sanju Samson as IPL Trading Window Opens
The IPL trading window is currently open, and Chennai Super Kings aren't the only franchise interested in acquiring Sanju Samson. According to the report, other teams have also approached Rajasthan Royals about the wicketkeeper-batter.
Meanwhile, the Royals' management recently held a review meeting in London, attended by head coach Rahul Dravid. During the session, they discussed multiple trade inquiries for several players, including but not limited to Samson.
Despite the growing interest, any trade involving Samson is unlikely to happen soon unless Rajasthan finds a suitable replacement. A decision is expected to be made by lead owner Manoj Badale.
Disappointing Season for Sanju Samson's RR in IPL 2025
Sanju Samson endured a challenging IPL 2025 season both as a player and captain of Rajasthan Royals. He was retained for ₹18 crore ahead of the mega auction. However, his campaign was disrupted by injuries. Samson began the season as an Impact Substitute due to a finger issue.
The right-handed batter later missed five consecutive games due to a side strain, with Riyan Parag stepping in as the stand-in captain. With the bat, Samson managed only 285 runs at an average of 35.62 and a strike rate of 140.39, scoring just one half-century.
His lack of form and absence during key phases contributed to RR’s underwhelming season. The team managed only four wins out of 14 games, finishing ninth on the points table and missing out on the playoffs.
