A man suspected of breaking into a Fort Bragg home earlier this month and sexually assaulting someone inside was arrested Saturday, the Fort Bragg Police Department reported.
According to the FBPD, around 8 a.m. on June 28, officers “served two search warrants in the 100 block of South McPherson Street in relation to an ongoing investigation into a sexual assault that occurred on June 21,” at which time they detained a suspect in the assault.
While searching the residence, officers reportedly located and seized several items linking the suspect to this sexual assault investigation, and other cold cases of burglary and prowling currently being investigated by the department,” and eventually arrested Cayden Craig, 23, of Fort Bragg, on suspicion of rape, burglary and false imprisonment, before booking him into Mendocino County Jail under $1 million bail.
In a press released, FBPD Chief Neil Cerenka is quoted as saying: “I am incredibly proud of the dedication and tenacity of our officers on this investigation. While they started with only a brief video of a masked subject, over the course of one week they chased every lead, conducted surveillance, obtained search warrants, located direct evidence to several crimes, and made an arrest of the person suspected of a violent crime. Demonstrating they are committed to the safety of our community.”
Officers initially responded to the 400 block of South Harrison Street shortly after 3 a.m. June 21 when a resident reported a sexual assault, describing a man knocking on their window before “forcing entry in the residence and sexually assaulting the victim.”
The first press release described officers as having “canvassed the area, searching for the suspect and contacting neighbors seeking further video surveillance. Officers have also begun taking other investigative steps in order to attempt to identify the suspect. The Fort Bragg Police Department is asking all residents in the area to review their surveillance footage from 1:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. on June 21, 2025, and submit anything relevant via the online community portal,” which the FBPD reports is still open.
