LA JOLLA – Science is good for more than just equations, and art helps us make sense of it all. To that end, Shapes to Forms is a recently opened business on Prospect St. in La Jolla that blends creativity with STEAM.
The shop educates youth aged 9 through 14 on how to create designs using math and geometry. Pattern-making involves measurements, calculation, and problem-solving to transform shapes into wearable geometry.
Diana Ngo is the mastermind behind this innovative approach to learning. She originally worked as an engineer, analyst, and Wall Street trader for 15 years before deciding to attend night school at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to pursue her love for fashion.
Today, she has combined her technical background with her creative eye to inspire students of all ages. The classes are held in The Stitch Lab and are open to youths, teens, and adults.
Home economics and sewing have been removed from most high school curricula. This type of education is a much-needed resource in the community.
Currently, Shapes to Forms offers Teen Fashion Workshops for ages 13-19. Other offerings include Sip & Sew for adults, Sew Fun! for ages 7-9, Sewing Studio for ages 10-14, and the Beginner’s Stitch for adults.

Looking ahead, Shapes to Forms will participate in Haute STEAM X in partnership with UCSD Extended Studies for a youth STEAM tech workshop on July 19.
Next up is Fashion Week SD’s Posh at La Plaza on Aug. 19.
One student, Elsa from La Jolla High School, was working on her fourth recreation of an 1850s corset. Mackenzie, a student at Muirlands Middle, was creating a sustainable outfit for the Posh at La Paza runway show. She shared that she first started sewing outfits for her Maltese and poodle dogs.
