Nick Kyrgios’ blueprint to KOing Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz: ‘Anyone that beats him needs this’

Nick Kyrgios believes the serve holds the key to defeat Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

Alcaraz is the defending champion, having won in 2023 and 2024, and is already in red hot form on the grass by taking the title at Queen’s.

The 22-year-old won his second French Open earlier this month and is already looking to bag his sixth Grand Slam.

For Kyrgios, it is hard to look past anyone else by Alcaraz for the title.

“Alcaraz is the favourite to win Wimbledon,” he told talkSPORT. “I saw a stat today, he’s won four tournaments on grass and he’s only lost three matches on the surface ever. So I think he’d be the favourite.

“What I love about Alcaraz, he’s got a bit of [Rafa] Nadal, [Roger]Federer and Novak [Djokovic], he’s all blended into one.

“He entertains the crowd, he’s got the physicality, he’s got the smile, he enjoys it. So I think Alcaraz would be the favourite.”

Kyrgios knows a thing or two about defeating a Spanish two-time Wimbledon champion on Centre Court.

He famously upset world number one Rafa Nadal at Wimbledon in 2014 when he was still a teenager.

But this is how he would approach taking on the young phenom.

“He’s just so confident on the surface. If I was to play him on grass, I would have to have an amazing serving day. I think anyone that beats him has to have a big serve.

“That’s why I think Novak really struggled against him last year in the final because he  couldn’t get any free points.

“Serving is essential against Alcaraz, but sometimes he has too many options. I like to say he’s almost too talented and he’s almost too good.

“Early on, in the first set or second set, he can drop early sets against other players. So locking in early against him would be essential too.

“But this guy’s a generational talent and I think when it’s all said and done he’s probably gonna have double-digit grand slams at least.

“There’s only really so much you can do. You probably hope for him you have an off day and then you have an incredible day.”

Alcaraz is on one of the hottest streaks of his career and anyone who beats him will need to play out of their mind.

His last defeat came in April and has made the final in all five of his last tournaments.

This fourth grass-court title means that Djokovic is the only active player to have more titles on the surface than Alcaraz.

“I came here with no expectations at all,” Alcaraz said after winning Queen’s.

“I just came here with a goal to play two, three matches, try to feel great on grass moving and give myself the feedback of what I have to improve.

“But I got used to the grass really quick, and I’m just really proud about it.”

Now his eyes are firmly on a third Wimbledon prize and just how quickly he adopted to the grass is an ominous warning to his rivals.
