Varun Chakravarthy shocks Ravichandran Ashwin with 42x pay hike disclosure

Indian cricketer Varun Chakravarthy made his debut for India in ODIs in 2025 and finally made his impact on international cricket. The cricketer has been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL for years and has emerged as one of the most significant wicket-takers in the competition.

He recently appeared in the former Indian veteran Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube show named 'Kutti Stories with Ash', where the KKR star mentioned his early life prospects before emerging as a cricketer.

He shared his insights on beginning as an architect immediately after college, only to move out of it, giving in to his passion for music, which even found him playing the guitar in the church choir. Returning to building his own architectural firm, directing short films, and working as a junior artist, getting paid 600 per day was how the KKR great started his career in the early days.

"Right after I completed college, I was working in an architectural company for one and a half years as an assistant architect," said Chakravarthy.

"After I left that job, for a brief stint, I took up guitar as I wanted to rekindle my love for music. But soon I realised that if you want to pursue some art, the love has to come from within. I realised it only after 6-8 months, and then I decided to stop."

"Then I decided to start my own firm in interior design and construction. It went well for a year until Cyclone Vardha happened, and I lost all my investment. So that ended as well. I was around 24-25 then," added Varun Chakravarthy.

Varun Chakravarthy is among the oldest debutants for India in ODIs

"I went there with the intention of becoming an assistant director, but that didn't work out. Then one of the ADs asked me if I played cricket. I said, "Only tennis-ball cricket." After this, he signed on as a junior artist with a salary of INR 600 per day."

During the conversation, Ashwin interrupted to ask Varun Chakravarthy about his current daily allowance as a cricketer, and the spinner revealed a staggering 42x pay gap, stating, “I get 300 USD (INR 25,652.78)."

This might have been the start of Varun Chakravarthy's developing interest in the game of cricket, as he slowly started off with a tennis ball and eventually moved to play seasoned cricket and emerged as a right-arm leg-spinner.

Varun Chakravarthy made his debut for India in the longer white-ball format in the second ODI against England. With this, he became the second oldest to have made a debut for India in ODIs at 33 years and 138 days.

Only Farokh Engineer made his debut post this age for India in ODIs. Chakravarthy, since then, was also part of India's Champions Trophy campaign.

Varun Chakravarthy's dominating performance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy

Varun Chakravarthy made his debut for India in the shortest format of the game back in 2021; however, he was dropped after a disappointing World Cup exit. He has played 18 T20I games and picked 33 wickets, with an average of 14.57.

Chakravarthy made his ODI debut back in 2025 in the England tour to India and was part of the Indian playing 11 in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final match against New Zealand. Chakravarthy picked 2 vital wickets in the final and now has 10 wickets in 4 ODI matches played for India.

He has a five-wicket haul in his short career in both formats of white-ball cricket. The player will once again be seen in action for the Indian white-ball side once it resumes for India with the first set of T20I games in India's tour to Bangladesh.
