Dale Steyn ignores India as he reveals his second love in cricket amid ZIM vs SA 1st Test

Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has shared his support for Zimbabwe during the ongoing first Test of the two-match series between the two teams at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Steyn called the Zimbabwean national cricket team his “second love” after the South African national cricket team.

The series between South Africa and Zimbabwe is not part of the World Test Championship 2025-2027 cycle. South Africa’s stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj opted to bat after winning the toss in the opening match. Lhuan-dre Pretorius became the youngest South African to score a century on Test debut.

Dale Steyn called Zimbabwe his “second love” in cricket. He noted that a strong and competitive Zimbabwe, along with teams like the West Indies, is important for global cricket. Steyn encouraged both sides to perform well in the ongoing match.

"It’s no secret my second love in cricket is Zimbabwe. Obviously I want the proteas to win, but I feel a good competitive Zimbabwe, West Indies etc is so good for world cricket. So just for a moment, GO ZIM! But also, to the team, PROTEAS! " Dale Steyn wrote on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

South Africa Collapsed to 55/4 in the Opening Session of Day 1

South Africa handed Test debuts to Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, and medium-pacer Codi Yusuf in their first Test match in Zimbabwe since 2014. The Zimbabwe bowlers exploited helpful conditions on the opening day of the match, reducing them to 55/4 during the first session.

Pretorius became just the seventh South African to score a century on Test debut. He added a 95-run partnership with Brevis, who scored 51 runs off 41 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes. Brevis was dismissed after reaching his half-century.

Pretorius continued to anchor the innings, reaching his hundred in the 50th over with a single off Wellington Masakadza. The left-handed batter scored 153 runs off 160 balls, including 11 fours and four sixes, before being dismissed by Tanaka Chivanga.

Centuries from Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Corbin Bosch Flatten Zimbabwe

Pretorius became the 10th youngest player in Test history to score a century. He also surpassed Graeme Pollock to become South Africa’s youngest Test centurion. Pretorius has now scored four hundreds in just eight first-class matches, including one on debut last December.

The young batter and Corbin Bosch, who had been stranded on 81* in his only previous Test, shared a crucial 108-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Bosch carried on and reached his hundred with the help of last man Kwena Maphaka. He remained unbeaten on 100 off 124 balls, including 10 fours.

Keshav Maharaj (21) and Codi Yusuf (27) added useful runs in the lower order, taking South Africa past 400. Tanaka Chivanga was the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe with figures of 4/83 in 16 overs. The home team declared their first innings at 418/9.
