‘I take ownership’: Starmer on his horror week

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has blamed being “distracted” by international events for the controversy engulfing his government at home, saying he takes responsibility for the tough week the Labour Party has endured.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Starmer denied that he was making excuses, but said he is the one in charge of the government and therefore is the one to blame.

“All these decisions are my decisions and I take ownership of them,” he told the paper.

“My rule of leadership is, when things go well you get the plaudits; when things don’t go well you carry the can. I take responsibility for all the decisions made by this government.”

More than 100 Labour MPs have lobbed a political grenade into the prime minister’s lap in the form of a “reasoned amendment”, which risked blowing the government’s welfare bill to smithereens.

It’s Starmer’s third major climbdown within a month, following the U-turns on a national grooming inquiry, and winter fuel payments.

The welfare issue dogged Starmer for the duration of the recent Nato conference in the Netherlands, as well as the G7 meeting in Canada.

“I’m putting this as context rather than excuse: I was heavily focused on what was happening with Nato and the Middle East all weekend,” he told The Times.

“I turned my attention fully to it [the welfare bill] when I got back from Nato on Wednesday night. Obviously in the course of the early part of this week we were busy trying to make sure Nato was a success.”

Starmer now faces a major loss of authority, another multi-billion black hole to fill, more tax rises, calls for big changes in No 10, and a divided Labour party.

And it all comes in a week that a major MRP poll landed suggesting that his majority is on course to be wiped out by Reform.

The prime minister defended the U-turn on welfare, telling the Times that it was a response to scrutiny and pushback from his party colleagues.

“Getting it right is more important than ploughing on with a package which doesn’t necessarily achieve the desired outcome.” he said.
