Diamondbacks suffer brutal loss after blowing 4-run lead to Marlins

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks took a 7-3 lead into the eighth inning of Saturday’s game against the Miami Marlins with their high-leverage relievers set up.

And yet, Miami stormed back with four runs off Jalen Beeks and Shelby Miller, forcing extra innings and stealing a win, 8-7.

Arizona (41-41) dropped its home series to the Marlins, who have won six straight games to fight out of last place in the NL East. The D-backs swept the Marlins on the road earlier this season (with Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk in the bullpen, mind you), and Miami threatens to return the favor at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks have 25 saves and 15 blown saves this season.

The game started to slip in the eighth inning after Beeks allowed a two-run shot to Otto Lopez.

Ryan Thompson let in an inherited runner charged to Beeks to bring the score within one.

Miller allowed a lead-off single that chopped through the 5-6 hole to Dane Meyers, who went on to steal both second and third base. His aggression worked, as he scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. The D-backs went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth against Marlins reliever Anthony Bender.

Juan Morillo, who has now pitched in four of the last five games, allowed a lead-off single to right field in the 10th to Agustin Ramirez for the go-ahead run.

Arizona went quietly in the bottom half against Bender. The offense did not record a hit after the sixth inning.

The Diamondbacks jumped ahead in the fourth inning, as they scored five runs and brought nine hitters to the plate against Miami starter Sandy Alcantara. Ketel Marte hit the go-ahead three-run homer into the Arizona bullpen, his 16th homer of the year.
