The Getty Villa reopens after devastating Palisades fire

The historic Getty Villa reopened Friday, nearly seven months after coming perilously close to destruction during January’s Palisades fire.

The inferno scorched the grounds around the stately museum, which is a reproduction of a villa from ancient Rome. However, the building itself was spared, thanks to the efforts of Getty staff who worked around the clock to monitor and put out small fires that sprang up, and firefighters working on adjacent properties. Museum crews have been working since to get it ready to reopen.

The site was covered with soot and ash that had to be removed from roofs, courtyards, patios and roadways, according to the Getty. Painted murals on exterior walls had to be cleaned and restored. Some 1,415 trees had to be removed due to fire damage, and plans are to replace them with more fire-retardant foliage in the future. The entire landscaping irrigation system melted and will be replaced.

A new exhibit, “The Kingdom of Pylos,Warrior-Princes of Ancient Greece‘ opened in conjunction with the reopening. The museum is open with limited hours for now, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Mondays. It’s free to visit, but advance reservations are required and there’s a $25 fee for parking, $15 after 3 pm.

The museum is at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades.
