NASCAR is mourning the death of former team owner Larry McClure.
The racing legend died at 81 years old in the hospital.
McClure was co-owner of Morgan-McClure Motorsports.
He was a part of three Daytona 500 wins in the 1990s.
His family shared that he died on Wednesday at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia.
“We would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this most difficult time,” they said in a statement.
McClure ran his Nascar team alongside Tim Morgan and his brother Jerry McClure.
Sterling Marlin was behind the wheel for two of McClure’s Daytona 500 wins, and shared his condolences on social media.
“My heart hurts finding out Larry McClure passed away,” Marlin wrote.
“He took a chance on me saying “I know you’ll drive the hell out of it.”
“He gave me a fast race car & back to back Daytona 500s. He was innovative, smart & a hell of a guy.
“Glad I got to see him last year. gonna miss him.”
McClure’s team had a total of 14 wins from 1983 to 2012.
The team finished in the top five 63 times, competing in over 700 races.
Tributes have poured in on social media for McClure’s family following his death.
“Sorry for your loss, God’s peace!” one fan said.
“I met Larry just a few weeks ago. I’m sorry to hear this,” another fan said.
“Man, that sucks. RIP,” a third fan said.
“The 4 cars were awesome. RIP Larry,” a fourth fan said.
“Y’all sure were fun to watch!” a fifth fan said.
