Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly considering a high-profile trade with Rajasthan Royals (RR) for IPL 2026 season. The five-time IPL champions might trade Ravichandran Ashwin and Shivam Dube to Rajasthan in exchange for Sanju Samson for the next edition.
Samson was last seen on the field as captain of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. The tournament ended on June 3, when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) claimed their first-ever title. Following the IPL, the Kerala-born batter travelled to the United States, where he was seen attending the MLC 2025 match.
Prasanna Aghoram, a former analyst with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and South Africa, has sparked fresh speculation about a possible trade between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
Prasanna stated that CSK have initiated discussions to trade an Indian off-spinner and a left-handed middle-order batter in exchange for a top-order batsman. His comments grabbed attention due to his close association with Ravichandran Ashwin, frequently appearing on the spinner's YouTube channel.

Sanju Samson to CSK, Ravichandran Ashwin & Shivam Dube to RR?
Prasanna Aghoram hinted that Chennai might trade Ravichandran Ashwin and Shivam Dube to RR in exchange for Sanju Samson. If the trade goes through, RR would receive players valued at ₹21.75 crore, while Samson is valued at ₹18 crore. RR are expected to pay the remaining ₹3.75 crore to CSK.
Samson may be open to moving away from Rajasthan despite performing reasonably well as both batter and captain. A switch to CSK could potentially see him take on the captaincy role, especially with Ruturaj Gaikwad struggling in that position over the past one and a half seasons.
Ashwin, who rejoined CSK in 2025 after a decade, failed to make a significant impact, taking just 7 wickets in 9 matches. Dube, on the other hand, had a solid season, scoring 357 runs in 14 games at an average of 32.45 and a strike rate of 132.22.
Sanju Samson Had Disappointing IPL 2025 Campaign with the Bat
Sanju Samson had a difficult IPL 2025 season. He sustained a finger injury during the T20I series against England earlier in the year, which forced him to play the first three matches as an impact substitute and later miss five consecutive games due to a side strain.
Samson scored 285 runs in nine matches at an average of 35.62 and a strike rate of 140.39, including just one half-century. His inconsistent form and limited appearances coincided with a poor season for the Royals, who finished ninth on the points table with only eight points from 14 games.
This season was also Rahul Dravid’s first as head coach of the franchise after his tenure with the Indian national team. Samson has played 177 IPL matches, scoring 4,704 runs at an average of 30.94 and a strike rate of 139.04, with 26 fifties and three centuries.
