2025 NBA Draft: Former Tennessee standout Chaz Lanier goes in second round

Chaz Lanier broke out as a senior at North Florida, transferred to Tennessee and set the SEC on fire a year later, and now he’s in the NBA.

On Thursday night, the Detroit Pistons selected Lanier with the seventh pick in the second round (37th overall) of the 2025 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-4 Lanier is joining one of the up-and-comers in the Eastern Conference and gives Tennessee an NBA draft pick for the fifth consecutive year.

Lanier spent 4 seasons in the A-Sun with North Florida, appearing in 104 games, before transferring to Tennessee. He made just 10 appearances as a freshman during the 2020-21 season, then served as a rotation player off the bench for the next 2 years. It wasn’t until the 2023-24 season that Lanier found his game. He started 31 times for North Florida while putting in 19.7 points per game and shooting 44.0% from 3 on more than 7 attempts a night.

He joined a Vols program that was looking to replace Dalton Knecht’s scoring punch, but there were questions about whether Lanier’s game would scale. He put those questions to bed in an emphatic way. Lanier averaged 18 points per game to go along with 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.9 steals. He started all 38 games for the Vols and shot 39.5% on 3s while taking more than 8 a game.

Lanier had a 30-point effort against Texas A&M on the road. He scored 29 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. He topped 20 points 15 times during the season and was awarded the Jerry West Award as the nation’s best shooting guard. He set the Tennessee single-season record for made 3-pointers with 123, good for the sixth-most in a campaign in SEC history. And he was named an All-American for his efforts.

The Pistons went 44-38 last season and won 2 games against the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs — the organization’s first Playoff wins since 2008. They have 10 players under contract heading into free agency. Several key pieces of last year’s guard rotation — Tim Hardaway Jr., Malik Beasley, and Dennis Schroder — are unrestricted free agents.
