Legendary 60s Rock Band Drops New Album — But Fans Still Flock to Old Classic

It’s been over 50 years since Pink Floyd released The Dark Side of the Moon, yet fans still can’t get enough of it — even compared to the band’s newest drop.

Earlier this year, the legendary group dropped At Pompeii – MCMLXXII, a collection of live recordings that includes performances of hit songs like “Echoes” and “One of These Days.”

The recordings date back to October 1971, when Pink Floyd performed in Pompeii, Italy. Digitally restored and remastered, the tapes were reissued alongside a concert film that premiered in theaters earlier this year.

When At Pompeii arrived in May, it was a commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on multiple U.K. charts. For a couple months, the live album held strong — but recently, momentum has started to fade.

Meanwhile, The Dark Side of the Moon is rising once again. The iconic 1973 album has reappeared on four U.K. charts this week alone.

It’s climbed to No. 83 on the Official Album Downloads chart, jumped more than 10 spots to No. 72 on the Official Albums Sales list and moved up to No. 75 on the Official Physical Albums ranking, according to Forbes.

So what does this all mean? While At Pompeii had its moment, fans seem to keep circling back to The Dark Side of the Moon — the album that gave us classics like “Breathe,” “Money” and “Time.”

It’s no surprise the album is making a comeback. Earlier this month, the 1973 record landed at No. 24 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart in the U.S., proving it still holds up after all these years.

When Pink Floyd — David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Roger Waters — first created the album, it took them seven months just to record.

Waters once recalled that when his wife Judy first listened to it, she burst into tears, something he took as “a very good sign.” Mojo Magazine reported he said, “I had a very strong feeling when we finished the record that we’d come up with something very, very special.”

He wasn’t wrong. The album has since sold over 45 million copies and famously spent a staggering 741 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
