Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance today apprehended Sagar Chandra Palai, Gaon Sathi (mate) of Balipatna, Bhubaneswar for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000.
The incident occurred while Palai was facilitating the release of the final instalment of payment under the MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) for a beneficiary.
According to Vigilance officials, Palai demanded the bribe from the complainant to process the last payment for the excavation of a pond on the beneficiary’s land under the MGNREGA Individual Scheme. Despite the completion of the work, Palai allegedly withheld the payment, pressuring the complainant for the bribe.
Frustrated by the harassment, the complainant reported the matter to the Odisha Vigilance authorities.
The Vigilance officers laid a trap and caught Palai red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs. 15,000.
Following the arrest, a search is underway at one location associated with Palai to investigate potential disproportionate assets (DA).
A case has been registered against him at Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station under Case No. 14/2025, invoking Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.The investigation is ongoing.
