Unification of crossing fees between Syria and Jordan and reduction to 2%

The joint Syrian-Jordanian technical committee for land transport has decided to modify and unify crossing fees between the two countries to 2% in both countries, down from 5% on the Jordanian side.

This decision comes today as part of applying the principle of reciprocity and facilitating shipping and transport between the two parties, according to what the Syrian official news agency (SANA) reported today, Thursday, June 26.

The committee, which met in the Jordanian capital, Amman, discussed ways to organize the entry of passenger transport vehicles and to continue the technical and administrative coordination between the relevant authorities to increase the number allowed to enter daily, which contributes to facilitating passenger movement.

The committee agreed to hold a technical meeting soon between the relevant authorities regarding the rail link between Damascus and Amman to discuss the technical aspects concerning the restart of the Hijaz railway line, which will be allocated in its first phase for freight transport.

    Abolition of diesel tax

On Wednesday, the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports abolished the diesel tax of $115, which was imposed on Syrian and Jordanian buses in both directions.

Under the agreement, the abolition is mutual; hence, no diesel tax will be imposed on Syrian buses heading to Jordan, nor on Jordanian buses entering Syrian territory.

This step, according to the authority, is part of the efforts of Syria and Jordan to remove obstacles to mobility and facilitate procedures in line with the mutual desire to enhance bilateral cooperation.

The Jordanian Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply announced on February 27 that work had resumed in the joint Syrian-Jordanian free zone.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Yanal Barmawi, stated that trucks had completed entry procedures into Syria via the joint free zone, according to the Jordanian Al-Mamlaka channel.

He added that the trucks were loaded with various types of goods, following the agreement on procedural and technical mechanisms between the Jordanian and Syrian sides.

    Unprecedented numbers

The head of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Commerce, Khalil al-Haj al-Tawfiq, announced earlier this June that trade exchange with Syria had increased due to the economic opening related to Syria, especially regarding reconstruction, describing the figures as unprecedented.

The number of trucks entering Jordan through Syria via the Jaber border crossing reached 55,566 trucks, 30,154 of which were Jordanian, 5,768 Syrian, and 19,644 foreign, during the period from mid-December 2024 to the end of May.

The total number of trucks departing from Jordan reached 59,788, including 21,574 trucks (national exports), 36,805 transit (from other centers), and 1,409 empty trucks.
