Grapensteter said the sheriff’s deputies informed her of her mother’s passing, and she initially received no information about her stepfather. The 27-foot boat they were on capsized during a storm, officials said, which caused high waves.
“They just loved being on the water and they were looking forward to the trip,” Grapensteter said. “They went with their two best friends. It was not something obviously that anyone was expecting. It was very tragic.”
Grapensteter expressed disbelief over the tragedy, saying, “I kind of live in a fantasy land that they are going to come home. And just be like surprise, were you guys ready. No, no we were not.”
She fondly remembered her parents as being full of jokes, especially when encouraging their kids to do things. “Amazing people—everyone knew them,” Grapensteter said. “They were like the mayors of the town.”
Grapensteter shared her last conversation with her parents, recalling a discussion about their travel plans. “I was up at their house. I remember. I’m like so what time are you guys leaving. And they said they have to be up at Julie and Steve’s by 4:30 a.m. or something like that. And she’s like no concierge we do not,” Grapensteter said.
The family is working to bring their parents’ bodies home before making funeral arrangements.
