Late singer Liam Payne reflected on the early days of One Direction in the trailer for Netflix's upcoming series Building the Band.
In the first Building the Band trailer, which was shared by the streaming service on Tuesday, June 24, Payne helped create the next big music group as a guest judge. The series also stars Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland as judges, while AJ McLean serves as the host.
“You got a lot of work to do vocally,” Payne was seen telling a group of contestants. “I need to feel that connection between you guys.”
Another clip showed the "Strip That Down" singer looking back at his experience as a member of One Direction. “To have these bands put together is not normal, we were put together that way," he said of his past band that comprised of him, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson.
As fans of the former boy band know, One Direction was formed on the U.K. edition of The X Factor in 2010. After becoming one of the most successful musical acts in the world, Malik, 32, shocked fans when he exited the group in 2015. The remaining members released one final album, Made in the A.M., before they went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
While fans hoped that One Direction would eventually reunite, their dream were no longer a reality when Payne died at the age of 31 when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October 2024.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say,” Malik, Styles, 31, Horan, 31, and Tomlinson, 33, said in a joint statement following Payne's passing. “But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”
Building the Band will mark Payne's final TV appearance. The show, which premieres on July 9, follows 50 singers as they form six bands and compete for the top spot without seeing what everyone looks like. Since they can’t physically see each other, the contestants must rely on the sound of their voices to be successfully advance in the competition.
