The Kansas City Chiefs are stuck in the middle of a battle that stretches beyond state lines.
Arrowhead Stadium, where the NFL dynasty has played for five decades, is in serious need of renovation.
While it boasts being the loudest stadium in the league, it has fallen behind the state-of-the-art, multi-billion dollar facilities that house rival franchises.
Lawmakers from Missouri and Kansas are now in a tug of war of the future of the Chiefs, with the latter putting forward a $3billion proposal to tempt the team over state lines.
Arrowhead is currently located eight miles outside of Kansas City, Missouri.
The state of Kansas would love to become the new home of the AFC Champion Chiefs, who boast superstar players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and call global music icon Taylor Swift their biggest fan.
As part of the $3bn proposal, a brand-new domed stadium has been floated, which would allow the site to host a Super Bowl in the future.
However, since those plans were put on the table, the state of Missouri has hit back.
Governor Mike Kehoe on Saturday signed a bill that will provide hundreds of millions in state money toward a $1.15bn renovation of Arrowhead Stadium, and a new venue for the Kansas City Royals who play at Kauffman Stadium next door.
The choice is simple: Stay in a renovated Arrowhead, or build a new stadium across state lines that could one day host a Super Bowl.
As of right now, the ball is firmly in the Chiefs’ court — and a deadline for a decision is fast approaching.
The team must decide what they are going to do by Monday, June 30.
The Chiefs have called Arrowhead home for five decades and have a storied historyGetty The team have previously shared concept images for their renovationsKansas City ChiefsWith that deadline less than one week away, KC mayor Quinton Lucas is confident the Chiefs will remain in Missouri for the billion-dollar renovation project — and provided an update on Sunday.
“I frankly continue to hope that we have it resolved sooner rather than later,” Lucas said.
“The June 30 deadline set up by the state of Kansas may be a little tough for us, but we’re going to make sure that we have a compelling offer to both (the Chiefs and Royals) in that time.
“Kansas City, and the state of Missouri, is where they need to be.
“In terms of where the offers are, I think it will be on the teams to decide how quickly they want to proceed.
“Kansas City, Missouri has made sense for 50 plus years. It will continue to do so.”
KC mayor Quinton Lucas is optimistic the Chiefs will stay in townGETTYWhile the Chiefs are in a tough position, having to choose between their iconic past and future away from Arrowhead, star quarterback Mahomes has previously made his feelings clear on any potential move.
“I love it, man. I love the people,” he said in 2024 of his bond with the fans and residents of Kansas City..
“The people are what make the city and they embrace you.”
Kelce has also previously made it clear he would prefer the franchise to stay put.
“Arrowhead is home for me,” he said
“It’s a part of my heart, playing in that stadium.
“But the fans want what the fans want. We play for them. I think it’s up to them.”
