What to expect: Severe weather heading into Denver metro on Tuesday

DENVER (KDVR) — After days of summertime heat, another round of severe weather is on the way with possibly large hail and gusty winds in the Denver metro and even an isolated tornado in the Eastern Plains.

A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Tuesday due to the severe weather storms heading into the Denver metro and the Eastern Plains. Severe storms occur when there are wind gusts above 58mph, hail larger than an inch, or storms produce a tornado.

Colorado has already seen several severe weather storms with damaging hail, heavy rain and even tornadoes across the state. On Tuesday, the Pinpoint Weather team expects more severe weather with large hail, gusty winds and even an isolated tornado.

What to expect for Tuesday's severe weather storm

Here's everything you need to know about Tuesday's storm:

    Timing

Denver will be mild in the 70s on Monday before a chance for pop-up storms in the evening across the metro. The storms die out overnight and Tuesday will reach into the 80s before seeing severe weather in the afternoon.

Around 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Pinpoint Weather team expects storms in the metro that push toward the Eastern Plains by 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. This includes hail, rain, gusty winds and an isolated tornado as the storm moves east.

There are also storm chances during the afternoon on Wednesday, but Tuesday's storm will be the strongest, with it being the best chance to see severe weather.

    Totals

While Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said it's hard to predict the exact size of the incoming hail a day before the storm, there could be large hail coming in from the north and landing in the metro area.

There will also be heavy downpours, which could lead to flooding in poor drainage areas across the metro area. Meanwhile, there could also be an isolated tornado as the storms push into the Eastern Plains.

    Impact

In the metro, Denver could see hail damage and localized flooding in the late afternoon on Tuesday. If you're planning on driving during the afternoon, look out for large hail that could damage windshields, flooding and loose branches.

The forecast also says there is damaging hail on Tuesday. The National Weather Service said hail usually causes damage when it's 1 inch or more in diameter, which is about the size of a quarter.
