In a surprising move that has left most Outlander stunned (albeit favorably so), Starz has made the bold decision to renew Outlander: Blood of My Blood for a second season one month ahead of the series' premiere.
An exciting prequel series set before the events of Starz' original Outlander series, Blood of My Blood will trace the dual love stories of both the Fraser family in 18th century Scotland and the Beauchamp family in World War One-era England.
In particular, the series will explore how the parents of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp (Caitriona Balfe) met in their respective historical settings, showcasing each couple's blossoming romantic connection amidst their perilous surroundings.
The upcoming series is scheduled to begin streaming on Starz on August 8, with each new episode arriving in weekly installments thereafter. Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy will star in the series as Jamie's mother and father respectively, while Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine will portray Claire's parents.
If this new development for Outlander's spin-off series weren't exciting enough, production on the show's second season has already begun, with filming commencing for the series in Scotland on Monday.
“The passion and talent our cast and crew have poured into Outlander: Blood of my Blood has been extraordinary and we’re thrilled to continue these epic love stories in Season Two,” Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer of the Outlander prequel series, said in an official statement.
“Just as audiences fell in love with Jamie and Claire, we hope viewers will be enamored by these new couples when they meet them this summer," Roberts continued.
"The world of Outlander has captivated audiences with its sweeping storytelling and unforgettable characters," said Starz programming chief Kathryn Busby, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
"With Blood of my Blood, we’ve expanded the universe in a way that honors the original, while charting bold new territory," Busby went on to say. "Fans — longtime and new — will be drawn to the powerful love stories at the heart of this next chapter, and we’re proud to continue building on the franchise’s legacy with Matt and our longtime-partners at Sony who have worked tirelessly to make Outlander the global phenomenon it has become.”
