Sunil Gavaskar cancels fielding medal ceremony; Gautam Gambhir told to take action against Shubman Gill after blunders

Legendary India National Cricket Team batsman Sunil Gavaskar was left furious with the fielding blunders made by the Shubman Gill & Co. in the Test series opener against the England National Cricket Team.

Also, former pacer Varun Aaron has demanded that the head coach Gautam Gambhir step in and change Test captain Shubman Gill's fielding position to avoid such howlers in the upcoming days.

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was breathing fire on Day 2 of the first Test against the Three Lions at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday, June 21.

He finished the day with three wickets in his bag in 13 overs, and he gave away a total of 48 runs in his spell at an economy of 3.69.

Bumrah could have added more wickets to his tally, but it didn't happen as the Indian fielders looked sloppy and not only allowed Ollie Pope to register his ninth Test century, but also England to close the day on 209 for 3.

Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped two catches off Bumrah's bowling - first of Ben Duckett in the fifth over and the second one of Ollie Pope. Also, the star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, arguably the best fielder in the world, dropped Ben Duckett on 15 off Bumrah's bowling, leaving the pacer dejected.

I don't think there will be any medal given - Sunil Gavaskar

After the end of every match, the Indian team management hands out fielding medals to the best performers - a tradition which was started by coach T Dilip.

However, Sunil Gavaskar wants the fielding medal ceremony to be cancelled after the silly errors on Day 2 of the Leeds Test.

"I don't think there will be any medal given. T Dilip gives those after a match. This is what was really very, very disappointing. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a very good fielder but he hasn't been able to hold on to anything this time," Sunil Gavaskar said on commentary.

Shubman Gill has been standing at mid-on and mid-off, one of the better slip fielders - Varun Aaron

Meanwhile, Varun Aaron criticized India's mistakes on the field and urged Gautam Gambhir to have a chat with Shubman Gill and order him to start fielding in the slips and not in the mid-on/off region.

"Dropped chances, in the end, they cost you games. Jaiswal dropped one before Jaddu, it would have been a sharp catch, but you have to back him to take those chances. Cam Green, for Australia, takes these without a fuss. I would say Jaiswal can be up there, but he has dropped two now. One of those days where it does not go for you," Varun Aaron said on ESPNCricinfo.

"Shubman Gill has been standing at mid on and mid off, one of the better slip fielders in India. I would back Shubman to be in the slips and take these catches, especially in England. Maybe Gambhir will have a chat with him, and be like, 'You can speak to the bowler in between overs and stuff like that, but we need you in the slips'," Varun Aaron added.
