Surprise heavyweight fight ordered as final eliminator for Daniel Dubois’ belt

The IBF have ordered a heavyweight final eliminator between Efe Ajagba and Frank Sanchez – four years on from their first fight.

Both teams have begun negotiations to determine the sanctioning body’s next mandatory challenger.

The current IBF heavyweight title holder, Daniel Dubois, is set to meet unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk on July 19.

Their rematch for the undisputed crown is scheduled for July 19 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Derek Chisora has also been rumoured to next face interim WBO titlist Joseph Parker in a trilogy clash later this year.

After previously being named ‘mandatory challenger’, his position was unclear after the IBF initially ordered Sanchez to fight Filip Hrgovic in an eliminator in April.

Ajagba is currently the IBF’s No. 3 contender and now has a chance to avenge his lone career defeat, whilst sitting just one spot ahead of the No.4-ranked Sanchez.

Both of their teams have been summoned to enter into negotiations for a fight to determine the sanctioning body’s next mandatory challenger.

In October 2021, Sanchez defeated Ajagba via unanimous decision.

The winner of their potential rematch could find an opportunity to challenge for the undisputed championship.

Sanchez was ordered by the IBF to face Croatia’s Hrgovic, placing him in a holding pattern.

The matchup was put in play in April, but talks never advanced and the matter was sent to a purse bid hearing.

The session was twice delayed before being cancelled outright when it was announced that Hrgovic will next face David Adeleye on August 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ajagba is coming off a draw in his previous outing, but seemingly did enough to edge Martin Bakole in their May 3 meeting in Riyadh.

The bout ended in a majority draw, after two of the three judges disagreed on the scores.

Per IBF rules, Sanchez and Ajagba are required to commit to the ordered eliminator to avoid losing their current top-five rankings.

Failure to move forward would result in the offending party dropping out of the top tern and no longer eligible to participate in an IBF-sanctioned fight for at least six months.

Additionally, neither boxer can accept another fight in the interim.
