ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Save Rochester and Lori’s Natural Food Center teamed up Thursday to give out free organic produce to families of Baden Street’s Child Development Program.
To celebrate Juneteenth, nearly 700lbs of fruits and vegetables, including watermelon, corn, collard greens, apples, grapes, potatoes, strawberries, celery, blueberries, and more were given out.
Mike Johnson, the organizer of Save Rochester, said people tend to get really excited about free produce and it being a lot of what they enjoy, but might not have access to.
“It is a wonderful thing for us to be able to have fruits and veggies for our children to take home so they are able to enjoy these same things at dinner time or snack time before bed,” said Kimberly Barnes-Ellis, the director of the Baden Street’s Development Program.
Barnes-Ellis also said when kids eat fruits and vegetables, she noticed they have more energy, aren’t as sluggish and are more interested in things.
“Studies have shown once kids are introduced to fresh healthy foods at a very young age and learn to enjoy it, they’ll continue those positive healthy eating habits throughout their lives,” said Johnson.
Save Rochester distributes fresh produce every week at Manhattan Square in Downtown Rochester for those in need, according to Johnson.
