We look ahead to this Group B match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our PSG vs Botafogo prediction and preview. Can either team back up their Matchday 1 victories?
PSG vs Botafogo Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer makes Paris Saint-Germain very heavy favourites to win. The European champions do so in 81.9% of simulations. This will be the first time a French team has played against a non-European opponent in a competitive game. PSG have won their last three competitive games by a combined score of 12-0.It will be a historic day when Paris Saint-Germain face Botafogo, as it will be the first time a French team have played a non-European opponent in a competitive fixture.
Luis Enrique’s side will be looking to follow up their thumping 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid on Matchday 1 with another here to all but seal their place in the knockout stage.
PSG are in tremendous form, having won their last three matches in all competitions by an aggregate score of 12-0, a run that includes wins in the finals of the Coupe de France and UEFA Champions League. They scored nine goals overall in their wins over Inter in the Champions League Final and Atlético in their Club World Cup opener. Despite all the stars on display, youngster Senny Mayulu was the only player to score in both games.
They will face a Botafogo team in good form too, though. Renato Paiva’s side have won four straight, and nine of their last 12 matches (D1 L2) in all competitions going back to 27 April. They had won just twice in their previous 14 matches going back to 9 February (D3 L9).
Botafogo kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders on MD 1, with Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus on target at Lumen Field. Jesus is a menace in the air; each of his last three goals for his club have come via headers, including his effort vs Seattle. The previous two came in May in the Copa Libertadores against Universidad de Chile and Estudiantes.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is someone Botafogo will need to keep an eye on. The Georgian winger assisted PSG’s first two goals in their win over Atlético on Sunday and has now been directly involved in five goals in his last three appearances for the club (3 goals, 2 assists).
Vitinha will be expected to control things in the middle for the Parisians again. The Portuguese maestro completed 98.3% of his passes against Atlético on Sunday (112/114), the best percentage for a PSG midfielder with 100 or more pass attempts in a match since Leandro Paredes in March 2022 (101/102 – 99.0% vs Bordeaux in Ligue 1).
PSG vs Botafogo Prediction
The Opta supercomputer is strongly of the opinion that PSG will make it two wins from two in the United States. They beat Botafogo in 81.9% of the 10,000 pre-match simulations, with the Brazilians only successful in 6.4%. The remaining 11.7% of sims ended in a draw.
Following MD 1, PSG (99.1%) are understandably favourites to progress through Group B and into the last 16, ahead of Atlético Madrid (59.7%). Botafogo are still less likely than the La Liga side (36.0%), though that is still a far greater chance than Seattle Sounders (5.2%).
