ESPN published a new story on Wednesday morning on the 10 “most unbreakable” records in college football history.
The story, compiled by Chris Low, puts Oklahoma’s 47-game win streak during the Bud Wilkinson era in the top spot. The Sooners won 47 in a row between 1953 and 1957. The streak finally came to an end with a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame on Nov. 16, 1957.
In the 7 decades that have passed since OU’s streak begun, there have been no serious challengers to what Wilkinson and Oklahoma accomplished with 47 consecutive wins. Here’s an excerpt of analysis from Low:
Nearly 70 years later, nobody has come close to that streak. Toledo won 35 straight from 1969 to 1971. Miami (2000-02) and USC (2003-05) each won 34 in a row. Even those star-studded Georgia teams under Kirby Smart failed to seriously challenge the mark. The Bulldogs won 29 in a row during their run to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022.
Remarkably, Oklahoma is involved in 4 of the top 10 records in Low’s story. Also honored are OU’s 472.4 rushing yards per game under offensive coordinator Barry Switzer in 1971 and Antonio Perkins’ 3 punt return touchdowns vs. UCLA in 2003.
The story also touches on the famous Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech game in 2016 that featured Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes. OU won that game 66-59 in Lubbock, but it was Mahomes who set the FBS record with 819 yards of total offense. The teams also combined for a record 1,708 yards in a single game.
